Shatley Springs Inn famous for its healing spring water and country cooking is located here in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off of Highway 16N in Crumpler NC. Founded by Martin Shatley in 1890 while passing by a cool mountain stream on the farm which he had purchased for his family. He had paused to dip his hand and face in the water to soothe his hot, blistered skin caused from a crippling skin disease which he had been diagnosed with for over seven years.
Within the hour after bathing his face with the cool water, the fever he was experiencing in his face was gone and his face was feeling much better. Later that evening he went back to the spring and bathed his face and other parts of his body in his new found curing water and within three weeks he was back out on the farm working and doing much better. Within six weeks his lung and other parts of his body which was effected by this disease was healed!
After years of failed attempts by doctors all over the county to heal Mr. Shatley from this terrible disease, it seems that he had stumbled upon this miraculous cure! Mr. Shatley spread the word about this water and from that day forward many people went to this spring with skin diseases, rheumatism and nervous diseases seeking a cure…and all were healed!
Years later Martin Shatley sold the farm surrounding the springs but did not sell the spring itself, returning each summer to bathe in the waters. After growing older and becoming unable to visit each summer, he sold the remaining property to three men: Alonzo McNeil, Bid Williams, and Mr. Harper.
The new owners refurbished the building with an cement enclosure and a new roof. In the 1920's they built cabins, a tea room and renamed the inn to Radium Springs. Later Mr. Williams bought out the interest of the other owners and changed the name back to Shatley Springs. He owned the property and the spring until 1958, when he sold it to Lee Q McMillian, the present owner.
